Explanation:
It is always important to assess the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation) first. Although it is also important to take a history and determine what happened, in an unstable patient a brief explanation can be obtained while simultaneously assessing the ABCs and stabilizing the patient. Once the patient is medically stable a more detailed history and physical examination can be completed. It is likely that this child will need an ICU admission but not until he is stabilized in the emergency department. A CT scan will likely be needed as well, although probably not a full body CT. However, once again it is important to assess ABCs, obtain a brief history and physical and stabilize medically prior to obtaining a CT.
